About us

Spain offers outstanding natural scenery, vast wide open spaces and an impressive abundance of wildlife. We have been enjoying the unique treasures our country has to offer for many years and, although it's good to keep some things a local secret, we want to show off these natural spaces and share our passion for the mountains with you! This has motivated us to start Go Trekking Spain, to make these places easily accessible to you and share our local knowledge of the area. We want you to enjoy the wild places of Spain as much as we do ourselves and we believe that nobody can show off an area like a local! We look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to the mountains.
Our guides gained their Mountain Leader qualifications in the School of the High Mountain of Benasque - la Escuela de Alta Montaña de Benasque (Federación Aragonesa de Montañismo) with official UIMLA qualifications (The Union of International Mountain Leader Associations).

The UIMLA International Mountain Leader is one of only two internationally recognized qualifications in the mountains worldwide.

Andrés Matías

UIMLA Hiking Guide.
Andrés has been involved in organising outdoor activities for 17 years. He worked for the Athletic Federation of Spain, organising championship events in international competitions held in Spain for various outdoor sports, such as cross country running, track and trail running.

He loves running and has taken part in many competitions himself, with his very first races taking place in Guadarrama, close to the Sierra de Guadarrama area where we run some of our trips. He particularly likes middle-distance trail running - but don't worry, he won't be running off ahead on any of our trips!
He loves the mountains, travelling and also really enjoys preparing journeys, itineraries, places to visit etc, which means he's ideally suited for organising hiking tours! Andrés specialises in year-round hiking in the Sierra de Guadarrama and the Pyrenees and he's been working as a mountain guide since 2013. He qualified in Benasque in 2013 and this was where he met Juan, who was starting out on the course at that time.

Juan Valencia

Qualified Hiking Guide. Juan has been involved in the outdoors all his life and has a particular love of the mountains and the sea. This led to him pursuing a career in guiding and becoming a fully qualified sea kayaking and hiking guide.
Juan has been hiking in the mountains since he was a child - he's hiked in the Himalayas, Rockies, Carpathians, the Alps and, of course, all around Spain and especially the Pyrenees. He enjoys skiing, snowboarding, surfing, hiking, cycling and kayaking and also watching wildlife.
Juan works as a sea kayak guide in the Canary islands during the winter (September to May, see Sea Kayaking Lanzarote) and a hiking guide in the summer and has 10 years experience in guiding. He's been a qualified mountain guide since 2015.

Jesús Almarza

Qualified Hiking Guide. An avid lover of the Pyrenees, Jesús has spent more than 25 years exploring them on foot, climbing, biking, skiing or by kayak.
With a background in forestry, Jesús is a nature lover and has built up an expert knowledge of the mountain ecosystem. He loves to share his knowledge of the flora and fauna that can be found here and his passion for the mountains and nature has led him around the world, climbing and hiking various places across South America, Europe and Africa.
He has a blog about journeys, ascents and climbs in the Pyrenees and pre-Pyrenees which you can find here: Jesús Almarza.
